Former Liberian Speaker Faces Arson Charges Following Capitol Fire Incident**

Liberia's former parliament speaker, Jonathan Fonati Koffa, has been formally charged with arson in connection to a devastating fire that obliterated the nation's House of Representatives last December. This fire erupted just a day after protests against Koffa's potential removal from office, underscoring existing political tensions in Monrovia.

Koffa has been at the heart of a political controversy, facing accusations of poor governance and corruption, which led to attempts for his impeachment in October. While he has consistently denied any involvement with the fire, local police report they have unearthed substantial evidence indicating Koffa may have orchestrated the incident. Alongside Koffa, five other members of the legislature have been detained as part of the investigation.

In a statement, Police Chief Gregory Colman revealed the range of charges against Koffa, including arson, criminal mischief, and attempted murder. There are claims that Koffa allegedly employed his position and staff to orchestrate sabotage efforts as early as November 2023. Both he and additional lawmakers were summoned to the Liberian National Police headquarters on Friday, with Koffa and some of his peers eventually being remanded to Monrovia Central Prison.

This catastrophic fire occurred on December 18, 2024, and it completely destroyed the joint chambers of the Liberian legislature; fortunately, there were no casualties, as the building was vacant at the time. Premised on a preceding day characterized by intense protests surrounding his impeachment, the atmosphere was charged, leading to the arrest of demonstrators, including individuals close to former President George Weah.

Further complicating matters, Representative Frank Saah Foko allegedly made a provocative statement on social media hinting at the potential destruction of the chambers. Investigations conducted by a team of independent US experts determined the blaze was likely set intentionally, bringing the scrutiny directly to Koffa amidst a backdrop of ongoing political infighting.

The struggle for power within Liberia's House of Representatives has been protracted, exemplified by Koffa’s resignation last month following persistent political gridlock. Despite attempts to impeach him not reaching the requisite majority, the faction opposing Koffa proceeded to elect their own speaker, setting the stage for further political confrontation.
