During a tense atmosphere surrounding the heated derby match between Espanyol and Barcelona on Thursday, a car collided with a gathering of football fans, resulting in thirteen injuries. The incident occurred shortly before Barcelona celebrated their 2-0 victory, which secured the La Liga title for the team. As the match commenced, the game was briefly paused to allow law enforcement to assess the situation and update the referee.

Reports from the police in Barcelona indicated that while four of the injured were transported to nearby hospitals, thankfully, none of them were in serious condition. Authorities affirmed through social media that the incident posed no further risk to spectators already inside the stadium.

The driver of the vehicle has been apprehended on charges relating to dangerous driving and causing harm. Eyewitness accounts and videos circulating on social media depicted the car, which had come to a stop near some refuse bins, subsequently surging into the crowd of fans who had gathered in anticipation of welcoming their team's coach.

Emergency services responded promptly, deploying ten ambulances to the scene. Of the injuries reported, the most severe was identified as a broken leg. Salvador Illa, president of the Government of Catalonia and a witness to the events unfolding at the match, reassured viewers in an interview with Spanish TV channel Movistar Plus, saying, “It was an accident, some people were injured, but not seriously. There are no major incidents to report.”

This unfortunate incident highlights the need for ongoing vigilance regarding crowd safety at large public events, particularly in a football-crazed nation like Spain.
