Convicted Murderer of British Backpacker Peter Falconio Passes Away in Custody
Bradley Murdoch, the man convicted of murdering Peter Falconio, has died at 67 while serving life imprisonment for his crimes.
Bradley Murdoch, the Australian convict sentenced for the 2001 murder of British backpacker Peter Falconio, has passed away at the age of 67 while incarcerated in Alice Springs prison, Northern Territory. Murdoch had been receiving treatment for terminal throat cancer in a local hospital in recent weeks.
The Northern Territory’s Department of Corrections confirmed the death of a male inmate, although specifics about Murdoch were not initially released. His conviction came in 2005 after Peter Falconio was shot and killed on a desolate highway close to Barrow Creek, approximately 300 kilometers (186 miles) north of Alice Springs. At the time of his murder, the 28-year-old Falconio was traveling across Australia with his girlfriend, Joanne Lees.
In addition to his murder conviction, Murdoch was found guilty of the attempted kidnapping and assault of Lees, who narrowly escaped her captor by hiding in the rugged terrain for hours before securing help. Murdoch, then aged 43, would later become the inspiration behind the 2001 horror film "Wolf Creek," which was loosely based on these events.
Recently, the Australian police had announced a reward of up to A$500,000 (£240,000) for information that could lead to the discovery of Falconio’s remains. Acting Commander Mark Grieve expressed the hope that new information might surface and emphasized that it is still possible for individuals to provide tips to help close this painful chapter for Falconio's family.
Authorities had made multiple attempts to engage with Murdoch to ascertain the whereabouts of Falconio’s body, but he consistently refused to cooperate. Grieve voiced his desire to provide closure to Peter Falconio's family and reiterated the importance of reaching out to law enforcement for any potential leads.
This story remains developing, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
