Diogo Jota's Fatal Crash: Police Investigate Speeding Factors
The investigation reveals that Portuguese star Diogo Jota was likely speeding before his tragic accident on a Spanish motorway.
Investigators have indicated that Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota was behind the wheel when his Lamborghini crashed on a motorway in Spain, and evidence suggests he was likely exceeding the speed limit. The incident occurred early last Thursday in northwestern Zamora province, claiming both Jota, 28, and his 25-year-old brother, André Silva.
Authorities from Spain's Guardia Civil confirmed that the sports car was overtaking vehicles on the A52 motorway near Palacios de Sanabria when it veered off the road and ignited. “All signs point to possible excessive speed beyond the legal limit on this highway,” stated local traffic police in Zamora.
The investigation has involved analyzing tyre marks found approximately 100 meters from the site of the disaster, which reportedly helped establish Jota's driving role in the crash. Meanwhile, a comprehensive expert report is in progress for court review. The fire caused by the crash was so intense that it almost completely consumed the vehicle, complicating the investigation's initial findings.
The tragic accident unfolded just 11 days after Jota married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso in Portugal, and they shared three children together. The brothers were en route to Santander to facilitate Jota's return to Liverpool for pre-season training when the accident occurred. Their funeral service took place in their hometown of Gondomar, near Porto, over the weekend.
While there were concerns about road conditions, police clarified that the stretch where the crash occurred does not bear the characteristics of an accident-prone area. According to reports, driving conditions were suitable for speeds exceeding the legal limit of 120 km/h (75 mph). The investigation continues as authorities seek to unravel all circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking incident.
