Emma Watson Receives Six-Month Driving Ban for Speeding Offence
Emma Watson, known for her role as Hermione Granger, faces a six-month driving ban following her involvement in a speeding incident.
Harry Potter star Emma Watson has been handed a six-month driving ban after being caught speeding in Oxford last July. The actress, who portrayed the beloved Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series, was clocked driving at 38 mph in a 30 mph zone, with the court revealing she already had nine points on her driving license prior to this incident.
Watson, currently pursuing a master's degree in creative writing at the University of Oxford, was fined a total of £1,044 at High Wycombe Magistrates' Court, during a hearing which she did not attend. Her representatives have been approached for a comment on the matter.
The actress became a household name in 2001 with the debut of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and starred in the eight-film series until its conclusion in 2011. Post-Harry Potter, Watson was featured in films like Beauty and the Beast and Little Women, the latter being her last film release in 2019. In 2023, she also co-launched a sustainable gin brand alongside her brother.
In a coincidental twist, fellow Harry Potter actress Zoe Wanamaker, who played Madam Hooch, faced similar legal troubles on the same day and at the same court as Watson. Wanamaker was fined with the same penalty for speeding on the M4 in Newbury, Berkshire, and also received a six-month ban, both actresses now facing an additional three points on their licenses.
As Harry Potter continues to dominate the entertainment news landscape, with a new HBO-produced series in development, Watson and Wanamaker's legal woes show that even stars can find themselves in hot water off-screen.
