Syrians Express Optimism Following Trump’s Announcement to Lift Sanctions
The lifting of U.S. sanctions is hailed as a vital step toward rebuilding Syria’s war-torn economy.
In Aleppo, the largest city in Syria, the streets echoed with joy as President Trump declared the lifting of U.S. sanctions in a speech delivered in Saudi Arabia. With the potential for rising salaries, lower costs for essentials like bread and gasoline, and improved electricity access, many residents felt a renewed sense of optimism about their post-war future.
“This will ease our worries,” said Sami al-Hajj, a pharmacist. He expressed relief about the prospect of new opportunities, stating, “Our fears for the future, for ourselves and our children, are beginning to dissipate.”
Analysts agree that lifting the sanctions is essential for the fledgling government to revitalize an economy that has been in tatters due to years of conflict. Previously, these sanctions had severed Syria from the international banking system, leading to isolation from global commerce, obstructing financial transactions, limiting imports, and preventing most international companies from engaging with the country’s market.
In conjunction with the announcement, President Trump also held a historic meeting with Syria’s newly elected president, Ahmed al-Shara, who gained prominence as a former rebel leader responsible for the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December. This meeting marked the first interaction between leaders of the U.S. and Syria in 25 years.
During their 30-minute conversation, Trump encouraged al-Shara to pursue peace negotiations with Israel, work towards expelling foreign militants, assist the U.S. in combating the Islamic State, and take control of facilities housing Islamic State detainees in northern Syria. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was anticipated to meet with al-Shara’s foreign minister to finalize these discussions.
As optimism continues to surge among the population, the journey towards reconstructing Syria remains fraught with challenges, but the lifting of sanctions could mark a turning point in the nation’s long road to recovery.
