Trump Set to Lift Sanctions on Syria Ahead of Meeting with Ahmed al-Sharaa

President Trump's decision aims to boost Syrian economy as he prepares for a pivotal meeting with the interim leader during his Middle East tour.

In a significant policy shift, President Donald Trump has announced plans to lift sanctions on Syria, coinciding with a scheduled meeting with interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Saudi Arabia. The announcement has sparked celebrations in Damascus, where cheers and gunfire rang out as citizens expressed joy over the prospect of increased foreign financing and aid, which had previously been barred by the sanctions. Originally imposed to apply pressure on the ousted regime of Bashar al-Assad, these sanctions have contributed to extreme poverty and devastation in Syria, with up to 90% of the population reportedly living below the poverty line.

Addressing an investment forum in Riyadh, Trump remarked on the potential for Syria to reclaim its status, stating, “it’s their time to shine." Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani hailed the lifting of sanctions as a crucial turning point for the nation, which seeks stability and reconstruction following years of civil war. Al-Sharaa has previously argued that the new regime should not be held accountable for the actions of Assad and has called for the de-listing of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a group challenging the Assad regime, as a terrorist organization.

Despite hopes for progress and stability, violence remains a concern, particularly for minority communities in Syria, who continue to face clashes and threats. The U.S. decision to lift sanctions is also a notable departure from previous policy, which called for demonstrable improvements in minority rights before any sanctions were eased. Trump's announcement followed discussions with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, emphasizing the importance of regional alliances in shaping U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.

Former U.S. ambassador to Syria Robert Ford commended the decision, asserting the necessity of international investment in reconstructing the war-torn country. As Trump continues his diplomatic mission across the Gulf states, his administration's approach to Syria could influence relations and economic opportunities in the region for years to come.

As international scrutiny continues, the unfolding situation in Syria remains critical, with many eyes on the outcomes of Trump's visit and the potential for transformative change in the war-torn nation.
