In brief

Charlotte “Betty” Webb, a distinguished member of the Bletchley Park codebreaker team, has died at the age of 101, as confirmed by the Women’s Royal Army Corps Association and Bletchley Park Trust. Webb, who was enlisted in the Auxiliary Territorial Service at just 18, made significant contributions to decrypting German and Japanese messages between 1941 and 1945. Recognized for her service, she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2015 and bestowed France's Légion d’Honneur in 2021. As one of the last surviving members of the Bletchley team, Webb frequently recalled her decision to leave her studies in domestic sciences to contribute to the war effort during a time when German submarines threatened Allied ships. Her work at Bletchley Park was integral to the success of the Allied forces, aiding in strategic naval movements during the conflict.

In her own words, Webb reflected on her commitment: "Several of us decided that we ought to be serving our country rather than just making sausage rolls."
