In brief

With no recent high-level meetings between the U.S. and China, Senator Steve Daines seeks to convey President Trump's priorities, particularly regarding the fentanyl crisis, and set the stage for a future meeting with Chinese leadership.

Senator Steve Daines of Montana has taken the initiative to act as a mediator between the Trump administration and Chinese officials amid a trade standoff that has seen significant tariffs imposed on both sides. Since President Trump began his second term in January, formal discussions have been noticeably absent, prompting Daines to step into the role of an unofficial emissary. In recent meetings in Beijing, Daines sat down with Vice Premier He Lifeng, who holds significant sway over economic issues within the Chinese government. He further plans discussions with Premier Li Qiang, the second-highest official in China, to convey pressing U.S. concerns, particularly the ongoing fentanyl crisis linked to drug trafficking through Mexican cartels. In an interview following his meeting with Vice Premier He, Daines expressed that President Trump was supportive of his mission to communicate the "America First" message while emphasizing the importance of addressing the fentanyl issue. He underscored the necessity for China to take decisive action to curb the flow of chemicals used in the production of fentanyl.Chinese representatives have pushed back against accusations, attributing the fentanyl crisis to the United States' inability to manage domestic demand effectively, while asserting that they have implemented measures to limit the export of fentanyl and its precursors.Daines aims to pave the way for a significant meeting between Presidents Trump and Xi Jinping but acknowledges that the timing and location remain uncertain. "This visit is the first step to arrange and set up the next step, which will be a very important meeting," he said, highlighting the emphasis on restoring dialogue between the two global powers in an increasingly tense economic landscape.
