In brief

Karim Khan, the chief prosecutor of the ICC, is now subject to an independent investigation regarding allegations of sexual misconduct following his involvement in high-profile war crimes cases.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has initiated an independent investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against its chief prosecutor, Karim Khan. The announcement came on Monday and emphasized that an external body would oversee the inquiry to maintain an independent and fair process. This investigation is particularly significant as Khan is recognized for pursuing arrest warrants for prominent leaders of Israel and Hamas amid ongoing conflicts in Gaza.In response to the allegations, Khan acknowledged the probe and proposed that his two deputy prosecutors manage the matter internally. "I welcome the opportunity to engage in this process," he stated, as reported by the Associated Press. Allegations had surfaced in October when a female colleague accused Khan of harassment—a claim he strongly denied. Subsequent reports suggested that Khan attempted to suppress these allegations, which he also refuted.Paivi Kaukoranta, president of the assembly that supervises the ICC, outlined that the court usually seeks permission from alleged victims before launching an inquiry. However, after discussions with Khan's accuser, the court concluded it was unable to proceed further at that time. Khan, reacting to these developments, asserted on social media that the oversight body had determined the matter "closed" without an investigation, as no formal complaint was filed.Khan also called for an investigation into the dissemination of what he termed "disinformation" regarding the case. As the ICC moves forward with this external inquiry, questions linger over Khan's future in the role of leading prosecutions related to international war crimes.
