In brief

Sixteen individuals remain unaccounted for following a tragic capsizing incident involving a tourist boat off the coast of Egypt, highlighting ongoing risks to maritime safety in popular diving areas.

In a harrowing incident on Monday, authorities confirmed that 16 individuals are still missing after a tourist vessel capsized in the Red Sea, following a sudden assault by a large wave. The boat, which was on a diving expedition, had departed from Marsa Alam Beach and was set to conclude its trip in Hurghada.Local and military search operations led to the rescue of 28 passengers, which included both tourists from various countries and Egyptian crew members. Those saved reportedly sustained only minor injuries and were taken to a local hotel for recovery. The vessel, identified as the Sea Story, was originally carrying 44 individuals, among whom were 13 Egyptians and 31 foreign tourists from countries such as the United States, Belgium, and China. The Egyptian authorities reported that of the missing persons, four are Egyptian nationals while 12 are foreign tourists. Reports suggest that the bodies of three individuals were recovered, though this information remains unverified. Prior to the incident, the Egyptian Meteorological Authority had issued warnings concerning impending high waves in the region. However, it remains uncertain if the boat's crew was aware of these forecasts before setting sail. Witnesses in Marsa Alam noted the turbulent conditions were present before the ship's tragic sinking.Eyewitness accounts indicate that the large wave struck the 111-foot vessel in the early hours, leading to its capsizing within minutes and leaving some passengers trapped inside their cabins. The emergency call was placed to authorities shortly after the incident, prompting a swift rescue operation from nearby diving boats and the Egyptian Navy.General Amr Hanafy, governor of the Red Sea province, noted that the Sea Story had successfully passed a safety inspection earlier in the year, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the capsizing is currently underway.
