In brief

In a poignant display of community resilience amid tragedy, Tyre's Christian residents struggle to find festive joy this holiday season, haunted by loss and ongoing fear of conflict.

In the coastal city of Tyre, Lebanon, the ancient Christian community is grappling with overwhelming sadness as Christmas approaches, bereft of typical holiday cheer. The streets once bustling with life now lie quiet, marked by destruction from months of relentless Israeli bombardments. As churchgoers shuffled into the modest brick cathedral for the final mass before Christmas, a sense of loss hung heavy in the damp air. The joyful celebrations of years past—complete with vibrant festivities, music, and the traditional Christmas tree in the city square—have been replaced by a stark reality of mourning and survival. Flattened buildings, abandoned storefronts, and a pervasive emptiness characterize the once-thriving community. Since the onset of the conflict, Christmas this year begins not with celebrations, but with the poignant task of honoring those whose lives have been cut short by the violence.Father Yaacoub Saab, who leads the Sunday Mass, made every effort to uplift the spirits of his church members, declaring it an honor to gather and pray. Yet, speaking candidly after the service, he acknowledged the somber reality: “We are finding it difficult to celebrate.” Despite a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, many residents of Tyre have fled, leaving the city’s Christian enclave, a historical treasure near the harbor, largely deserted. Those who remained have endured extreme hardship, relying on dwindling supplies as essential services like water, electricity, and medical care become increasingly scarce.Amid these challenging conditions, the community clings to faith and the hope of better days, as they navigate the emotional toll of loss and the uncertainty of their future.
