In brief

The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, a rare and celebrated surfing event, draws both competitors and thousands of spectators to Hawaii's North Shore, highlighting the urgency and excitement surrounding the competition.

The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, famously known as "The Eddie," is a highly selective surfing contest that takes place in Hawaii under optimal wave conditions. Invited surfers must respond quickly when the event is called, usually less than 48 hours before the contest. This year, 45 elite surfers from around the globe, including Australia, Brazil, France, Italy, South Africa, and Tahiti, hastily arranged their travel to Waimea Bay.On Sunday, as the waves rolled in, Barry Sweet and his family took position at Pupukea Grill, a food truck strategically located near the action. Sweet describes the influx of visitors as a pilgrimage, with many fans camping out to secure views of the thrilling event. The beach and surrounding cliffs are set to be crowded with enthusiastic spectators, while Kamehameha Highway becomes a bustling pathway leading to the bay.The Eddie has a unique scheduling structure; it operates within a holding period that runs from mid-December to mid-March, which increases the anticipation for surfers and fans alike. Unlike typical competitions that occur regularly, The Eddie takes place only when wave conditions are deemed extraordinary, leading to the phrase "the bay calls the day," symbolizing the unpredictability and reverence held for this surf event.
