In brief

Bari is on the brink of a transformation as it welcomes direct flights from the U.S. for the first time, turning the historically crime-ridden city into a budding tourist destination.

In recent years, Antonio Maria Vasile, head of Puglia’s airports, has dedicated his efforts to reshaping the narrative surrounding Bari, the regional capital of Puglia, Italy. For generations, Bari was overlooked by travelers in favor of Naples and Sicily. Mr. Vasile argued for the charm of his hometown, pitching the city’s rich history, culture, and culinary delights as compelling reasons to visit. His perseverance was rewarded when Neos Airlines announced the inaugural direct flights from New York's Kennedy Airport to Bari, set to start in June. This milestone marks the first ever of its kind, connecting the U.S. directly to Puglia. These flights, operating weekly until October, are expected to spur interest and excitement among locals and visitors alike. But the transformation is met with mixed feelings among residents, who are both excited and cautious about the influx of tourists. While many hope for economic revitalization and increased recognition for the region known for its picturesque coastline and vibrant culture, some harbor concerns regarding potential crime resurgence, a problem that had once plagued the historic old town.As travelers begin to rediscover Bari’s landmarks, including the ancient Castello Normanno-Svevo and the Basilica of St. Nicholas, the resident population of around 330,000 is optimistic about the new opportunities that lie ahead for their enriched cultural landscape. Mr. Vasile remains optimistic, suggesting that this development could play a critical role in repositioning not just Bari but all of Puglia as a prime destination in Italy.
