Two women who reported being drugged and raped by prolific sex offender Zhenhao Zou said they were attacked within 24 hours of each other, the BBC has established. The first woman who says she was raped revealed her shock at learning about the second attack and has since felt guilt for not reporting her rape sooner. Metropolitan Police detectives investigating Zou's offences initially questioned whether the two women might be the same person, as the two attacks sounded similar and occurred within a short timeframe. This timing suggested that Zou had grown increasingly confident, as a source familiar with the investigation explained to the BBC World Service, stating, 'He was getting away with it, so he wanted to do it more and more.'
Zou was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 24 years in June. The Chinese national was convicted of drugging and raping 10 women—three in the UK and seven in China—over several years, all appearing to be Chinese victims. After his trial, detectives described Zou as one of the UK’s most prolific predators, fearing he may have attacked up to 50 additional victims. Following the trial, 24 women from both the UK and China have come forward, including the victims of the two attacks.
One victim, referred to as Rachel, detailed her experience of meeting Zou for drinks, after which he allegedly drugged her with a cocktail that left her incapacitated. During the incident, Zou reportedly seized her phone to prevent her from calling for help. The second victim, known as Female D, was attacked shortly after Rachel's ordeal, and Zou was convicted of raping her with video footage presented during the trial.
The ongoing investigation by the Metropolitan Police urges additional victims to come forward, as the ramifications of Zou's actions extend beyond his current convictions.
