In brief

Israeli naval forces have executed targeted strikes on the Houthi-held port city of Hudaydah in Yemen, a significant move amidst escalating military tensions marked by missile exchanges between Israel and the Houthi group.

Israeli navy ships have struck targets in the port city of Hudaydah, an area under the control of the Houthis in Yemen. The Israeli military justified the strikes as a necessary response to Houthi missiles that had recently targeted Israel, emphasizing the objective of neutralizing the port's use for "military purposes." No immediate casualties have been reported from the strikes.Video footage shared on social media depicted rising plumes of black smoke ascending from the port, with the Houthi-operated al-Masirah TV confirming that at least two targeted strikes took place. The Houthi forces have frequently launched missile strikes at Israel in a show of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, which escalated following a recent offensive by the Israeli military against Hamas in October 2023. A missile launched by the Houthis was intercepted over Jerusalem on Thursday, and just last month, another missile struck near Israel's main airport. The Israeli strikes on Hudaydah, executed by naval vessels rather than aircraft, took place in the early hours of Tuesday. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had previously issued evacuation warnings to individuals in and around Hudaydah port and other neighboring Houthi-controlled ports such as Ras Isa and Salif. In a statement on social media platform X, Avichay Adraee, an IDF Arabic spokesperson, urged those in the vicinity of the ports to evacuate for their safety due to the Houthi regime's utilization of these locations for terrorist activities. In response to the strikes, Nasruddin Amer, the deputy head of the Houthis' media office, claimed on X that the attacks inflicted little to no damage on their operations, reiterating that the morale of their supporters remained unaffected as they continued to rally in support of Gaza.Hudaydah port is crucial for the import of food and humanitarian aid for millions of Yemenis and has previously been subjected to Israeli strikes. The Houthi health ministry reported a casualty from a prior strike in the same region last month, claiming that it rendered the port inoperable for approximately a month.Since taking control of much of north-western Yemen in 2014 and initiating a civil war, the Iran-aligned Houthi group has targeted vessels in the Red Sea as part of their solidarity with Palestine. Following the conflict escalating in October, the Houthis executed numerous missile and drone assaults on commercial vessels, which resulted in the sinking of two ships and the seizure of another, alongside the deaths of four crew members. Their actions prompted significant shipping firms to cease operations in the Red Sea and reroute traffic around southern Africa, leading to considerable disruptions in global trade. In reaction to the military actions, former U.S. President Joe Biden authorized air strikes against the Houthis, a campaign that surged after Donald Trump's presidency until a ceasefire was achieved in early May. The situation remains fluid as tensions persist between regional actors and the conflict continues to impact humanitarian efforts and commercial shipping routes in the area.
