Rapper Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, is recovering in a hospital following an inmate stabbing incident that occurred early Tuesday morning at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, approximately 75 miles north of Los Angeles. According to state corrections officials, Lanez was attacked while in a housing unit at the facility.
Prison staff reacted quickly, activating 911 and administering medical aid before Lanez was transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation confirmed that Lanez's injuries were reportedly non-life threatening, although specific details on his condition remain undisclosed. An inquiry into the motive behind the stabbing is currently underway.
Lanez is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence, which he received in 2023 for multiple felony gun-related charges, including the shooting of fellow musician Megan Thee Stallion during a confrontation at a party in 2020. The altercation stemmed from a heated discussion inside a vehicle about their previous romantic relationship. During the incident, Lanez shot at the ground near Megan, reportedly demanding she “dance” before the shooting severely injured her and required her to undergo surgery.
Despite his conviction, Lanez has continued to assert his innocence and has refused to issue an apology to Megan. The case has polarized opinions within the hip-hop community, with some artists advocating for leniency during his sentencing. Over the years, Lanez enjoyed significant commercial success, boasting seven albums that reached the top 10 on the US charts before his legal troubles began. He has hinted at the release of a new album titled "Peterson" while serving his time in prison.
