In brief
Thirty homes have been evacuated due to sinkholes raising alarm in a Surrey neighborhood, as experts investigate their potential causes.
A sudden geological upheaval in Surrey, England, has led to the emergence of two significant sinkholes, prompting the evacuation of 30 homes in the area. The Surrey County Council has declared a major incident, prioritizing the safety of local residents following the appearance of a large crater on Godstone High Street. The first sinkhole, which formed on Monday night, expanded to an alarming size of 65 feet by 20 feet and reached depths of up to 16 feet by the following day. The second hole, located on the opposite side of the street, measures 16 feet by 16 feet and is equally deep. Fortunately, as of Tuesday, both holes appear to have stabilized, meaning they are no longer increasing in size. While the direct cause of this geological event remains unknown, geologists are working to determine the factors that could have contributed to such a sudden occurrence. Andrew Farrant, a geologist at the British Geological Survey, mentioned that the underlying bedrock in Surrey consists of poorly cemented sandstones formed during the Lower Cretaceous period, which can easily succumb to erosion, particularly when influenced by water runoff.Experts speculate that a burst water pipe may have triggered the erosion beneath the road, leading to the collapse or potentially revealing an ancient, undocumented sand mine. Vanessa Banks, another geologist with the British Geological Survey, pointed out that increasing urbanization is putting extra stress on aging water infrastructure, which could exacerbate such incidents, especially during periods of intense rainfall.Residents have been grappling with uncertainty. Noosh Miri, one of the evacuees, expressed anxiety over the condition of their home, noting, "Our house is not secure at all. At the moment we don’t know the extent of the damage but we do know we won’t be going home for some time." Though currently no one is believed to be in danger, local authorities are taking precautions to ensure public safety in light of this unexpected geological phenomenon.
