Several prisons across France were the scene of intense violent acts late last night, according to a statement from Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin. He reported various "intimidation attempts" that included multiple incidents of vehicle arson and gunfire from automatic weapons directed at prison facilities. Among the six targeted locations, major sites included prisons in Toulon, Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, Valence, Nîmes, Luynes, Villepinte, and Nanterre.
In a social media update, Darmanin confirmed he would be visiting Toulon to express solidarity with law enforcement officials dealing with the spike in violence, but refrained from directly blaming specific groups for these attacks. He asserted that the French government is poised to implement strategies aimed at significantly disrupting existing criminal organizations that may be behind this surge of aggression.
