Iran Designates Britain's Royal Navy, Air Force and MI6 as "Terrorist, Hostile" Entities

Iran’s Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday that Britain’s Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) would be designated as terrorist and hostile entities in a retaliatory move against the United Kingdom’s policies toward Iran. The designation, effective immediately, follows a resolution adopted by Tehran’s Supreme National Security Council.

Background

The ministry’s statement said the designation was a direct response to what Tehran called "anti‑Iran actions" by the United Kingdom over the preceding year, identifying the British government’s use of the United Kingdom’s military bases to facilitate operations that Iran views as hostile.

The resolution, approved by the Supreme National Security Council, also cited the UK’s designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a national threat, an action Iran says violates the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.

The foreign ministry condemned the United Kingdom’s actions as contrary to the Charter’s prohibition on the use of force against other sovereign states and the principle of non‑intervention.

Iran’s statement highlighted that the British naval and air units have been provided support for operations that Iran alleges directly threaten its security and sovereignty.

According to the ministry, the designations are made in accordance with international law and the principle of reciprocity, warning that the United Kingdom would face the consequences of the measures it is imposing.

Historically, the relationship between Tehran and London has been fraught, marked by periods of diplomatic strain over sanctions, human rights, and the status of Iranian nationals in the United Kingdom.

In the last twelve months, the United Kingdom has been cited by Iran for participation in what Tehran calls a "war" against Iran by allowing the use of UK territory and facilities for military operations undertaken by other powers.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry specifically named the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, and MI6, the secret intelligence service, as the entities to be labelled, a list that had not previously been barred by Tehran.

Officials in Tehran say the move signals a significant escalation in diplomatic hostilities and is intended to deter further perceived interference by British forces in Iranian affairs.

Whether the United Kingdom will respond or impose reciprocal sanctions or military measures remains unclear, as the British government has yet to issue an official comment on the decree.

Analysts note that designation of foreign military units as hostile can complicate maritime and air space agreements, potentially affecting navigation rights and intelligence sharing.

Iran’s foreign ministry further stated that the designation would take effect immediately and that Iran reserves the right to apply reciprocal measures against British personnel and assets.

The decision comes amid ongoing tensions over Iran’s nuclear program, ballistic missile advances, and regional influence, factors that have driven both sides toward increasingly confrontational stances.

Until a formal reply from the United Kingdom or a statement from Washington regarding possible diplomatic repercussions, observers will await the next moves from both superpowers as the situation unfolds.
