In brief

In a significant legal ruling, a South Korean court has sided with Ador, the management label of K-pop group NewJeans, denying the artists' attempt to pursue independent commercial ventures. The band intends to appeal, citing ongoing mistreatment.

The K-pop girl group NewJeans has encountered a legal setback as a South Korean court issued an injunction preventing them from terminating their relationship with their record label, Ador. This ruling came after the quintet had aimed to explore solo commercial endeavors without the label’s involvement. On March 21, 2025, judges from the Seoul Central District Court recognized Ador's authority as the group's management, which puts a pause on NewJeans' ambitions to release new music, organize solo appearances, or enter into separate advertising contracts. The five members of NewJeans, who recently rebranded themselves as NJZ, made headlines last November when they announced their departure from Ador, alleging unfair treatment by the label. In response, Ador took legal action to assert its contractual rights over the group, intensifying the ongoing conflict. In a statement, NJZ expressed their intent to appeal the court’s decision, arguing that the ruling failed to reflect their concerns about diminished trust with Ador. "We believe that the decision did not fully take into account the complete breakdown of trust the members have experienced toward Ador," said NJZ, emphasizing that they were not given enough opportunity to present their side fully during court proceedings.Conversely, Ador celebrated the ruling, reiterating its position as the exclusive manager of NewJeans. The label stated, "With our status as NewJeans’ exclusive agency now legally affirmed, we are fully committed to supporting the artists going forward."Despite the legal setback, both parties confirmed that NewJeans will still participate in the upcoming ComplexCon festival in Hong Kong. The ongoing feud between Ador and NewJeans has captivated fans since August 2024, especially as it revolves around the group's key executive producer, Min Hee-Jin. After Min's removal as the head of Ador by its parent company, Hybe, strained relations escalated, leading to the band’s public demand for her return.Hybe, also known for being the label behind global K-pop phenomenon BTS, faces additional scrutiny in its management decisions as musicians and fans alike continue to watch the unfolding drama closely.
