In brief

A bus crash in the Philippines has led to ten deaths and several injuries, with investigations focusing on driver fatigue and past safety issues.

The Philippines was shaken by a tragic bus accident that left ten individuals dead and over thirty injured after a bus collided with several vehicles at a toll gate on one of its busiest highways. The driver, reportedly detained following the crash, claimed to have dozed off before the incident, which has raised concerns over driver vigilance on the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway, known for ferrying workers between Manila and nearby regions.Among the deceased, four were children, as families were traveling for Labor Day celebrations at the time of the crash. The Department of Transportation has responded by suspending operations of Solid North Bus, the company that operated the bus involved in the accident. Local authorities indicated that the driver may face serious charges, including "reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicides." Additionally, the bus conductor has also been taken into custody. The collision involved not only the bus but also three sports utility vehicles and a container truck. The Philippine Red Cross has stepped in to provide support, including food and medical aid to injured passengers who are receiving treatment at local hospitals.Bus accidents are a frequent occurrence in the Philippines, raising ongoing concerns about public transportation safety. Drug use among bus drivers has been highlighted in recent weeks, although it remains unclear if it played a role in this latest tragedy. Earlier this month, several public transport drivers faced suspension after testing positive for illegal substances.Transport Secretary Vince Dizon plans to meet with representatives from about thirty bus companies to address the alarming frequency of accidents and drug use among drivers. He emphasized the necessity for immediate improvements and accountability among bus operators. This incident follows a separate accident earlier in 2023, which led to the deaths of seventeen bus passengers when a vehicle’s brakes failed, proving that road safety remains a critical issue across the nation.
