In brief

A tragic helicopter crash in northern Bosnia on Thursday claimed the lives of four Italian military personnel and injured eleven others, prompting Brčko mayor Sinisa Milic to declare Friday a day of mourning. The incident is among the most serious military events involving foreign troops in Bosnia‑Herzegovina since 1997. While Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto visited the wounded in hospital, the investigation into the crash’s cause remains underway.

On Thursday night, an Italian helicopter belonging to the European Union Force (EUFOR) plunged near the city of Brčko, northern Bosnia and Herzegovina, killing three crew members on impact and a fourth shortly after being taken to the hospital. Eleven other crew and support personnel were injured but reported no life‑threatening conditions.

Mayor Sinisa Milic announced that Friday would be a day of mourning for the four victims, describing the incident as “one of the most tragic events involving international military forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1997,” according to the local news agency FENA.

In response to the tragedy, Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto travelled to Bosnia on Friday to visit the wounded EUFOR personnel in local hospitals. He was accompanied by Bosnian Defence Minister Zukan Helez, with the team expressing gratitude to the helicopter pilot for safely steering the aircraft away from a densely populated area, thereby preventing civilian casualties.

Despite the loss, the crash was noted for the pilot’s skill in avoiding the city centre. Milic further praised the pilot’s action that helped avert a larger disaster, a point underscored by officials at the EUFOR headquarters.

Amid the national mourning, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement expressing sincere condolences to Italy. The ministry said the Kingdom stands in solidarity with the families of the victims, the injured, and the people and government of Italy during this difficult time, wishing a speedy recovery for those harmed.

EUFOR has been present in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1994, tasked with ensuring regional stability after the Bosnian war. Italian forces have participated in the peacekeeping mission for more than two decades, regularly undergoing joint training exercises, some of which were underway when the helicopter crash occurred.

According to official reports, no one on the ground was killed during the crash, and the emergency response teams adhered to standard protocols for hazardous rotorcraft incidents. However, the exact cause of the flight’s failure has not yet been released, and investigators have yet to publish a preliminary report.

The unanswered questions revolve around the mechanical state of the helicopter, pilot training, and whether environmental factors could have contributed. The investigation by the EUFOR accident inquiry board is ongoing, and a conclusive determination of how the tragic event unfolded remains pending.
