IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A state agency revoked the professional license of the leader of Iowa’s largest school district on Monday, days after federal agents arrested him on accusations that he was living and working in the country illegally. The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners notified Des Moines public schools Superintendent Ian Roberts that he was ineligible to hold a license due to his lack of legal presence in the U.S. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained Roberts, a native of Guyana who entered the country on a student visa in 1999, after a traffic stop led to his apprehension. He allegedly possessed a loaded handgun, a hunting knife, and $3,000 cash at the time of his arrest. School officials stated they were unaware of his illegal status, as Roberts had provided verification of his citizenship when he was hired in 2023. With a contract extended through June 2028, he was placed on unpaid leave following the school board's decision. The board received notification from the Department of Homeland Security that Roberts had been unauthorized to work in the U.S. The board plans to allow Roberts’ attorney time to contest these allegations, while the district's unusual situation has left the community concerned amid pending investigations into how he was hired despite his undocumented status.
