In brief

As U.S. rapprochement with Russia intensifies, Ukraine faces mounting challenges under President Zelensky, amid concerns regarding a potential sidelining in peace negotiations.

In recent developments, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine confronted a challenging week as European officials convened to discuss his country's future amidst increasing tensions. The Trump administration's demands for $500 billion in Ukrainian mineral rights and the termination of Ukraine’s exemption from U.S. steel tariffs significantly escalated worries for Ukraine. Compounding these issues, Vice President JD Vance, a prominent critic of military aid to Ukraine, was also en route to meet with Zelensky. On Wednesday, matters became increasingly dire. Trump’s defense secretary presented a bleak outlook on Ukraine’s military prospects against Russia, and Trump's own announcement of a phone call with Russian President Vladimir V. Putin indicated a possible thaw in U.S.-Russia relations. This communication was framed by Trump as the beginning of peace talks but explicitly excluded mentions of Zelensky's role in these discussions. The developments signal an end to U.S. efforts to diplomatically isolate Russia, which followed its invasion of Ukraine almost three years ago. Cliff Kupchan, head of the Eurasia Group, noted that Zelensky now appears diplomatically vulnerable. Furthermore, Trump's recent actions, including a prisoner exchange that freed an American educator, contribute to a growing perception that American foreign policy is shifting towards accommodating Russia—a move that may disadvantage Ukraine in any forthcoming peace negotiations.Although Trump did reach out to Zelensky following his conversation with Putin, his social media post did not clarify whether Zelensky would play a part in the anticipated peace talks, leaving many questions regarding Ukraine's position unaddressed as global dynamics shift.
