In brief
In a shocking act of violence, a shooting incident at the Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists in northern California has left two young children seriously injured and a community in mourning.
On a Wednesday afternoon, Glenn Litton, a 56-year-old man with a troubled past, managed to enter the school under the guise of meeting an administrator to discuss enrolling a student, according to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office. Shortly thereafter, he opened fire in the school, targeting in particular two kindergarten-aged children aged six and five. The victims, currently in critical but stable condition at a trauma center, were shot outside their classroom and are now facing a long road to recovery.Authorities believe that Litton's motivation for the shooting stems from his opposition to U.S. involvement in foreign conflicts, particularly the crisis in Gaza. A note was found at the scene outlining his grievances, in which he expressed a desire to enact what he referred to as "child executions" in protest of what he termed "Genocide and Oppression of Palestinians along with the attacks towards Yemen." Sheriff Kory Honea indicated that Litton's history included mental health issues and a record of criminal charges related to theft, fraud, and forgery, raising concerns about his capability to carry out such violence. The shooting, which occurred shortly after 1:00 PM local time, caused a swift alert to other Seventh-Day Adventist institutions to ensure student safety across the network. In the aftermath, the remaining students were evacuated and taken to a nearby church where they were reunited with their families. Sheriff Honea expressed gratitude that the young victims are alive, given the severity of their injuries, yet acknowledged the challenges they will face in their recovery process. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the increasing frequency of gun violence in U.S. schools, prompting further debates on safety measures. As community members grapple with this trauma, officials continue their investigation into the underlying motivations behind this violent act.
