In brief

The French government has successfully navigated a critical no-confidence vote, giving itself a temporary reprieve while facing a fragmented political landscape.

France’s government managed to stay afloat on Wednesday after surviving a no-confidence vote in Parliament, granting newly appointed Prime Minister François Bayrou a momentary break from the ongoing political turmoil the country has endured. The motion, which aimed to oust him and his cabinet, achieved backing from only 128 lawmakers out of the 577 in the National Assembly, falling short of the majority required. The failure of this no-confidence motion allows the passage of a crucial budget bill aimed at addressing France's rising debt and deficit. The country has been operating under temporary funding since the start of 2025, and this budget is expected to facilitate savings of 50 billion euros through a combination of increased taxes and spending cuts.Next, the budget bill is set for a final approval vote in the Senate on Thursday, with Mr. Bayrou also advocating for additional legislation affecting healthcare and social security spending. These initiatives, while vital, expose his government to potential new no-confidence motions, although Mr. Bayrou is anticipated to weather these challenges as well.Nevertheless, the bigger issue of governing in a deeply fragmented political climate persists for Mr. Bayrou. The National Assembly is split between his centrist-conservative bloc and two main opposition forces—the left-wing New Popular Front and the far-right National Rally party—both of which remain aloof to his administration.Despite these hurdles, the recent vote and the impending budget approval provide a temporary veneer of stability for one of Europe’s major economies. Mr. Bayrou, who is aligned with President Emmanuel Macron, was appointed just over a month ago, making him the fourth prime minister in a turbulent year for France.
