Accounts Clash Over the Trigger
Palestinian witnesses claim that residents confronted a group of about 30 Jewish settlers who were harassing homes. An eyewitness was seized by Israeli soldiers who began shooting afterwards. By contrast, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated they had received a report that hikers had been assaulted and that a security guard’s weapon was taken by a Palestinian, who then used it against soldiers. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a full‑force response, calling an emergency meeting with security officials and dispatching additional troops near the settlement of Havat Gilad. In a joint statement with Defence Minister Israel Katz, the Israeli government vowed to demolish the “home of the Palestinian shooter” and accelerate the legalisation of unauthorized outposts, a move that critics label a declaration of “setting the area ablaze.”
