Watch: Inside the 30‑hour dating retreat run by monks
In South Korea, a new trend is sprouting up in the quiet halls of a Buddhist temple. The Donghwasa retreat invites singles to spend a full day and night in the search for love away from the usual bars and coffee shops.
Twelve participants (and journalist Jake Kwon) were guided through daily sessions, group discussions, and meditation by monks who emphasize listening and self‑reflection over wine and conversation.
The programme ran for 30 hours, offering structured interactions such as face‑to‑face chats, lock‑conversation games, and a final chant where participants could express feelings in a calm setting.
At the end, none of the couples tied the knot – yet some claim the experience opened them to new perspectives on what it means to connect without the distractions of modern dating apps. The retreat highlights a move toward deeper, intentional connections, even in a tech‑driven society.
