Five people have been injured, one critically, in a shooting at Virginia State University (VSU) involving multiple suspects.
Officers responded to the incident outside a residence hall at about 1:28 a.m. local time (05:28 GMT) on Saturday, the university said.
All five victims were taken to local hospitals with gunshot wounds. Four sustained non‑life‑threatening injuries. The student victim was treated and discharged, while a victim under 18 was also hospitalized.
Chesterfield County Police, led by Lt. James R. Lamb, stated there was evidence of more than one shooter, but that no suspect was in custody.
The university lifted a temporary campus lockdown, but police maintained a significant law enforcement presence. Campus police, along with other local agencies, are reviewing surveillance footage.
Classes for the new term were scheduled to resume on Monday, and dormitories reopened for students on Friday. Campus remains closely monitored as investigations continue.
VSU, a historically black college with about 5,000 students located roughly 20 miles south of Richmond, continues to support students impacted by the tragedy.
