Vincent Pastore, the Sopranos' "Big Pussy," Dies Aged 80
The actor who portrayed Tony Soprano’s staunch friend—finger‑picked for the role by the show’s creators—has died, a BBC‑CBS News report says. Pastore, 80, returned to the Bronx home where he had lived most of his life, and was found without any indication of violence.
In the series his character, Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero, is torn away as an informant after a haunting betrayal during the second season. The dramatic arc made the character one of the most talked‑about moments in the ten‑year run.
Pastore’s talent was also felt beyond the hill‑mob drama. A Navy veteran who served during the Vietnam era, he later broke into film with roles in Goodfellas and Carlito’s Way, before turning to television with regular spots on Law & Order, General Hospital and Hawaii Five‑O.
He was a 2000 Screen Actors Guild award‑winning ensemble member of The Sopranos and was praised by manager Robert Attermann as a “passionate, generous, and loyal friend,” remembering Pastore as “so much more” than just a screen presence.
"To the world, he will always be remembered as the unforgettable 'Big Pussy', but to those of us who knew him, he was so much more," said Attermann.
Pastore’s passing marks the loss of a close‑knit New York actor celebrated by fans and professionals alike for decades, whose legacy continues to echo in the evolving landscape of American television drama.
