In brief

South Sudan's vice president, Riek Machar, has been under house arrest since March, raising concerns of a deteriorating political climate and the risk of renewed conflict in the nation.

Riek Machar, the vice president of South Sudan, has found himself confined to his residence in an elite district of Juba since March, as armored personnel carriers and armed security personnel restrict access to his compound. Inside, Machar lives in solitude, stripped of his communication devices, while his wife, who serves as a government minister, is only permitted to prepare meals for him without direct interaction. This nation, the youngest globally, emerged as an independent state in 2011 with significant support from the U.S. However, just two years later, it plunged into a brutal civil war characterized by ethnic strife, with Machar and President Salva Kiir on opposing sides. In an effort to escape this cycle of violence, the two heads of state established a unity government in 2020, laying the groundwork for prospective elections. Unfortunately, this fragile peace appears to be eroding, as Machar faces charges of inciting rebellion through a militia known as the White Army, which has recently been implicated in the downing of a U.N. helicopter. With violence on the rise and no clear succession plan available, there are growing fears that South Sudan's wealth in oil could ignite further warfare, potentially triggering a humanitarian crisis involving a mass influx of refugees into neighboring countries like Ethiopia and Sudan, already grappling with their struggles of war and famine. The situation has also elicited Uganda's response, with troops deployed in March to lend support to Kiir's regime."The situation in South Sudan is dire and critical,” remarked Puok Both Baluang, acting press secretary for Machar. He asserted that the vice president's detention violates constitutional rights, impeding his movement and disregarding his status as an officer immune from such treatment.
