In November 2024, Chen was arrested in Beijing while visiting family, according to the hostage‑advocacy group Global Reach. His wife, Rong Yufang, a fellow seismologist, insists the charges are false and that Chen’s work has always been transparent and collaborative with Chinese scientists.


Chen has spent almost two years monitoring seismic waves from North Korean nuclear tests—an activity that could touch on data of interest to Beijing’s own nuclear ambitions. U.S. intelligence suggests China may be developing a new arsenal and conducting secret tests, a claim Beijing denies.


During a press briefing, China’s foreign ministry said the case was handled “in accordance with the law,” rejecting claims of “wrongful detention.” However, the detention of a U.S. citizen raises questions over the conditions and possible political motives.


Chen has reportedly faced repeated interrogations—over 100 visits by officials—and was denied legal counsel for the first 13 months. Global Reach has warned that his health—he suffers from diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol—could deteriorate without proper medical care.


U.S. Senator Edward Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, criticised China’s treatment of Chen and urged the Chinese state to release him. Markey highlighted that the case might deter other academics from engaging with Chinese colleagues.


The controversy follows the recent arrest of another American scholar, Min Zin, who was accused of spying. Both cases occur amid heightened tensions over nuclear testing and the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which both China and the United States have rejected outright.


As the situation unfolds, the U.S. government and international community watch closely, wary of potential diplomatic fallout and the implications for scientific collaboration across borders.
