In brief

The Israeli government has taken drastic measures as wildfires rage near Jerusalem, forcing evacuations and the closure of major roads, with requests for international assistance amidst worsening conditions.

Raging wildfires have pushed the Israeli government into a state of emergency, leading to the evacuation of several towns surrounding Jerusalem and the closure of major roads. As firefighters battled some of the most intense blazes seen in years, the wildfires disrupted the nation’s annual memorial day, which honors fallen soldiers—a deeply significant day in Israeli culture. Televised memorial ceremonies were abruptly replaced with scenes of civilians evacuating on foot along packed highways. As the flames spread further, several planned events for Israel’s Independence Day were called off due to the fire and accompanying severe weather conditions, including powerful winds. The origins of the wildfires remain undetermined at this time.Eyal Caspi, head of Israel’s fire and rescue service, described the situation as “one of the toughest events” he has ever faced, noting that the challenging conditions rendered firefighting aircraft ineffective. Fortunately, there have been no reported fatalities; however, the Magen David Adom emergency service confirmed that at least 19 individuals sustained light injuries while fleeing the threats posed by the flames.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement, attributed the ferocity of the fires to a mix of high winds and extreme dryness, creating what he termed a "deadly combination." As the fires continued their advance Wednesday evening, Israel sought international help. The government reached out to countries including the UK, France, Greece, and Italy for firefighting support. In an unexpected turn, the Palestinian Authority offered to assist Israeli firefighters battling the flames. Senior Palestinian official Hussein al-Sheikh extended the offer via text, recalling a similar collaboration in 2021 to combat wildfires near Jerusalem. It remains unclear if Israeli officials intend to accept this offer of assistance.Reflecting on recent fire incidents, Mr. Caspi previously remarked that climate change appears to exacerbate wildfire conditions in Israel, with one specific fire advancing at a rate of eight meters per second—unprecedented in his experience. "When we talk about global warming, this is the reality," he emphasized in a news conference earlier this week.
