A severe tidal surge in Tenerife has tragically resulted in the deaths of three people and injuries to fifteen others. The incidents, prompted by powerful waves battering the popular Spanish holiday island, have led emergency services to issue urgent warnings to stay away from coastal paths and avoid taking photos or videos of the rough seas.
A woman was the first victim, pulled into the ocean near the Puerto de la Cruz resort, followed by a man who died at Santa Cruz de Tenerife. A third man was discovered dead in the ocean near a beach in Granadilla.
Rescue efforts have been hampered by turbulent seas. Emergency responders airlifted another man who fell into the water at La Guancha, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Furthermore, a man who was found floating near El Cabezo beach could not be resuscitated despite attempts by lifeguards and medical staff.
At Puerto de la Cruz, a woman suffered a heart attack, and among the ten people who were swept out to sea, three sustained serious injuries and required hospitalization. A local waiter, Pedro, shared his experience of jumping into the water to assist those in danger, managing to save three people while tragically witnessing the death of another.
Despite warnings, tourists continued to gather near the waves. Eyewitness Carlos reported efforts to caution onlookers, but many did not heed the advice. Officials are currently advising that conditions in the Canary Islands will likely deteriorate further, with expected swells of two to four meters, urging both locals and tourists to exercise extreme caution.
