LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — A man being questioned by police at a suburban Atlanta hotel shot two officers on Sunday, resulting in the tragic death of one officer and serious injuries to another.

The incident occurred Sunday morning near Stone Mountain, approximately 25 miles northeast of Atlanta. The officers had been dispatched to the hotel following a report from an individual who stated that someone had fraudulently used their credit card at that location, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Upon arrival, the officers were directed to the suspect's room where he greeted them and invited them inside. During the conversation, he unexpectedly produced a handgun and fired at the officers in what police described as an unprovoked attack.

Officer Pradeep Tamang, 25, succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital. Officer David Reed was reported to be in serious but stable condition.

Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure expressed his sorrow during a news conference, stating, “This is the latest reminder of the dangers law enforcement face on a daily basis... we are grateful for every one that puts themselves in harm’s way to protect their fellow Georgians.”

The suspect has been identified as Kevin Andrews, 35, from Decatur, Georgia. He was also injured during the exchange and is receiving medical treatment but is expected to survive.

The investigation has been handed over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which typically examines cases involving law enforcement-related shootings. It remains to be determined what charges, if any, will be filed against Andrews.
