A fire has killed 10 members of the same family, including five children, at a home in Peru’s capital Lima, police say.

The blaze tore through the southern La Victoria district early on Wednesday, according to Peruvian National Police official Gen Oscar Arriola. Five children aged three to 15 and four adults aged 29 to 72, plus a fifth adult whose age was not disclosed, lost their lives, while two others were hurt.

Police are investigating reports that the fire was deliberately set, with local media suggesting it may have been arson. The family, who made mattresses and owned electric motorcycles, had reportedly received threats and extortion demands before the tragedy, raising questions about potential motives.

A report by the government news agency Andina claims neighbours heard unknown individuals ignite motorcycles parked outside, and the flames rapidly spread through combustible mattress‑making materials. Out of seventeen occupants, seven managed to escape; police confirmed that the bodies were burned beyond recognition.

“Today, all of Peru falls silent in the face of a tragedy that plunges our nation into mourning,” a statement from the National Police of Peru voiced the collective grief.
