At least four people have been killed in a huge fire that has engulfed multiple high-rise buildings in Hong Kong's Tai Po district. At least three more are injured, two of whom are in critical condition, a government statement said. There are fears that some individuals may still be trapped inside the tower blocks, according to local media reports. Footage shows flames and thick clouds of grey smoke billowing from the towers of the Wang Fuk Court housing complex on Wednesday afternoon. The cause of the fire remains undetermined, but it is believed that the flames spread quickly through bamboo scaffolding that covered the buildings. The fire department confirmed that one of the victims was a firefighter. The blaze started at 14:51 local time (06:50 GMT), quickly escalating to a level four alarm within 40 minutes and then rising to the highest level five alarm by 18:22. As night fell, images revealed that the flames continued to rage, engulfing at least three tower blocks. The Hong Kong government reported that nine people were transported to two hospitals for treatment. In total, four people have been confirmed dead, while three are in critical condition, one is serious, and one is stable. Wang Fuk Court consists of eight tower blocks providing 1,984 apartments for around 4,000 residents. It was undergoing renovation, utilizing bamboo scaffolding, a common but controversial construction method in Asia known for its lightweight yet strong properties. Reports indicated that the government has been working to eliminate the use of bamboo scaffolding due to safety concerns.
