LOS ANGELES (AP) — Investigators were questioning a family member of director-actor Rob Reiner and his wife Michele after they were found dead at their home in Los Angeles, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation.
Officials believe the couple suffered stab wounds, prompting a deep investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department. Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton stated at a briefing that the police had yet to identify a potential suspect.
On the afternoon of the incident, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical aid request, finding a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman deceased in the residence. Rob Reiner celebrated his birthday just months prior in March.
Detectives from the Robbery Homicide Division are handling this apparent homicide, as confirmed by Capt. Mike Bland of the LAPD. Notably, the Reiners resided in Brentwood, a neighborhood known for its affluent residents, including several celebrities.
Rob Reiner, who is recognized as one of Hollywood's most prolific directors, has given audiences memorable films throughout the 1980s and ’90s, among them “This is Spinal Tap,” “A Few Good Men,” “When Harry Met Sally,” and “The Princess Bride.”
He gained widespread fame as Meathead on the long-running TV show “All in the Family,” where he presented a liberal perspective against the character Archie Bunker. Reiner received two Emmy Awards for his performance.
Family members of the late Norman Lear mourned this tragedy, describing Rob and Michele as devoted individuals trying to make a positive impact through their creativity and philanthropy.
Messages to Reiner’s representatives went unanswered as of Sunday night. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed her sorrow, calling it a devastating loss for the city and acknowledging Reiner's cultural contributions and advocacy work.
The couple shared three children and celebrated their marriage since 1989, following Reiner's earlier marriage to actress-director Penny Marshall. The Brentwood area is typically peaceful, with major crimes being quite rare.
