The Cuban government reports that 32 nationals were killed during a US operation aimed at capturing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. These individuals were described as members of Cuba's armed forces and intelligence agencies, who died 'in combat actions', prompting a declaration of two days of national mourning.
The Cuban armed forces stated that these personnel 'fell after fierce resistance, in direct combat against the attackers or as a result of bombardments of installations.' Over the years, Cuba has played a crucial role in supporting Maduro's regime, providing security details and military personnel.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel emphasized that the assistance to Maduro and his wife was at the request of the Venezuelan government. Reports indicate that US intelligence monitored Maduro's movements extensively before carrying out the strikes, which also resulted in a significant number of casualties among Maduro's close security team.
While Venezuelan officials haven't confirmed the total death count, unclear reports suggest casualties may exceed 80. An official statement from the Cuban government praised its citizens for fulfilling their duty 'with dignity and heroism'.
This incident has raised alarms about potential future US military actions against Cuba, with President Donald Trump suggesting that Cuba is on the brink of collapse, making military intervention unnecessary. Ongoing hostility between the US, Cuba, and Venezuela remains a critical concern for regional stability.
