A British man has died after being shot during a robbery in Ghana on Friday, according to police reports.


Ashraf Qarmar Parvez, 68, was shot after trying to intervene when assailants attempted to steal his phone at a drinking spot in Tema, located to the east of the Ghanaian capital, Accra. He succumbed to his injuries later in the hospital.


Authorities in Ghana are currently searching for the shooter, who is believed to be one of a group of six suspects that fled the scene on motorbikes.


The UK Foreign Office has stated that it is supporting the family of the deceased.


As part of the investigation, police recovered a 9mm spent bullet shell from the scene and have begun interviewing witnesses. This tragic incident has raised security concerns in Tema, although a local police spokesperson assured that such shootings are rare in the area.


Efforts are ongoing to contact the British Embassy to officially notify them of the death of their national, police reported in a statement.
