Student Killed in Zamboanga Catholic School Shooting
In a devastating incident on Tuesday, a student at the Catholic Ateneo de Zamboanga junior high school in the southern Philippines was shot dead by a fellow student who later took his own life, a local official said.
The alleged shooter managed to sneak a .45‑calibre pistol into a classroom, fired at a seated teacher—missing the target—and then moved to another room where he shot a student who later died.
Alleged livestream footage of the shooting, circulated by local media, showed what appeared to be a first‑person perspective, with the gun barrel moving down a hallway. The situation was brought under control and there were no more active shooters, authorities said.
The tragedy comes two months after a high school shooting in Tacloban City that left three students dead and 20 others wounded. Those incidents involved teenage boys, one of whom was known to have regularly played the explicitly violent online game “Gorebox,” which has been banned in the Philippines.
Across South East Asia, authorities are scrutinizing the potential impact of violent content on minors, with discussions on restricting social media use for young people gaining traction. Earlier this month, a Thai teenager killed eight people and himself at his school after reportedly consuming violent content on social media.
