Tragedy Strikes Madrid: Four Lives Lost in Building Collapse

Four people have died after a six-storey building in the heart of Madrid partially collapsed while under renovation. The tragedy unfolded on Hileras Street, prompting swift emergency response efforts.

Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida confirmed that rescue teams recovered the bodies of the last two victims early Wednesday morning, roughly 15 hours after the collapse occurred. The incident left three others injured.

Among the deceased is a 30-year-old Spanish woman, the project manager, alongside three male workers from Mali, Guinea, and Ecuador, aged between 30 and 50 years. The building, a former office block, was being converted into a four-star hotel.

Emergency services deployed drones and sniffer dogs to search for those trapped under the debris. A construction worker reported witnessing the collapse while working outside, describing his rapid escape when a cloud of dust engulfed the area. Authorities have launched an investigation to uncover the cause of the collapse as local media highlight the ongoing renovations carried out by the developer Rehbilita.

The building's façade remained intact despite the collapse, allowing for recovery efforts to be conducted in an organized manner.
