Monday evening was busy as usual near the Red Fort metro station in Delhi when the sound of a loud blast disrupted the streets. An explosion in a car killed at least eight people and injured more than 20. The sound was so powerful that nearby vehicles were almost melted, and people could hear it from kilometres away.
The police are investigating the cause of the explosion, which has left residents in disbelief, given that it occurred in one of the most secure areas of Delhi. Adjacent to the Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chandni Chowk is a bustling commercial hub, especially during the peak wedding season.
Mohamed Hafiz, residing just 200 meters from the explosion site, spoke of his initial shock, thinking the blast was an earthquake. The aftermath was horrifying: There was blood everywhere. People were in shock, and I could even see body parts, he recounted. Panic spread across the city as police declared high alert.
As reporters arrived, the scene was one of chaos, with onlookers—many confused and frightened—pondering how a blast of such magnitude could occur in their city. Local resident Rajesh Kumar expressed disbelief, asserting that he had always believed Delhi to be safe.
Among those gravely affected was Mohammed Azghar, whose brother has been missing since the explosion. My brother used to drive an electric rickshaw. We’ve searched everywhere but can’t find him, he lamented, deeply concerned for his family’s safety.
At Lok Nayak Hospital, where many injured individuals were treated, the atmosphere was tense. Family members searched for answers amid a backdrop of fear and uncertainty regarding safety in the capital. Many echoed Azghar's longing for answers, whether good or bad.
Witness accounts from the blast site reveal the extensive damage: cars, rickshaws, and other vehicles were left mangled and bloodied. Locals are expressing concern for the future of their businesses as fear looms large. Ram Singh, a local goods transporter, voiced his worries: I hope a sense of security returns soon.
As investigations continue, the spirit of resilience among the residents shines through. Many are determined to overcome the trauma and restore trust in their city.
