Sydney Marathon Medal Misprints German Stadium Instead of Sydney Landmark

The 2026 Sydney Marathon medal was unveiled to find the back side showing Munich’s Allianz Arena instead of Sydney’s Allianz Stadium, the local landmark the race follows. A social media post from the marathon’s official account urged runners to "look closely and you’ll find the story of the course in the details," only for them to spot the wrong stadium. The error has left organizers scrambling to explain the mistake as the race draws near.

Munich’s Allianz Arena is made of thousands of diamond‑shaped inflatable cushions that give it a sculpted look, while Sydney’s similarly named Allianz Stadium sports a flatter façade with long bronze fins. The medal’s reverse side also shows a gold and indigo pattern created by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian, with forty‑two concentric shapes representing each kilometre of the 26‑mile course. Killian said he had no involvement in the stadium imagery.

The blunder echoes last year’s Great North Run, where medals featured Sunderland and the Wear River—designs that had little to do with Newcastle. The mistake comes as Sydney prepares to welcome its first Abbott Major marathon, joining the likes of London, Berlin, Boston, Chicago, New York, and Tokyo. With about 40,000 runners registered for the August 30 event, the medal mix‑up has turned from a curious glitch into a talking point on social media.
