Special Forces Accused of Killing South African Detective
Senior detective Lt Col Frans Mathipa, a respected officer in the Hawks unit, was on the verge of a breakthrough in a key investigation. After months of seeking a vital clue, he warned that pursuing the information could be fatal. The next day, his vehicle was found overturned and he was shot dead.
In August 2023, seven special‑forces soldiers and one military police officer faced murder charges. Three years after the killing, no trial date has emerged and the body of Abadigga has never been found. Calls for accountability continue to grow amid growing public pressure on the South African military.
The case remains unresolved, with the defendants who refuse to comply with a court order revoking their bail still serving in the army.
