After a test flight from Texas on 24 July, a 52‑metre SpaceX rocket hit the water off the coast of Christmas Island. The craft, designed to launch into orbit, finished the flight by touching down in the Indian Ocean and has been sighted drifting south‑east of the island’s shoreline.
David Watch‑orn, chair of the Christmas Island Tourism Association, said he initially mistook the vessel for a parade of ships responsible for his daily commute. He only recognized it as a rocket once the hull, complete with its sheer‑walled shape, was fully visible in the water.
The unexpected presence excites locals and visitors alike. Some have taken to sneaking out of work to get a better view, while others have gathered their boats to study the rocket’s debris up close. The sighting has turned a quiet beach day into a spontaneous display of scientific intrigue.
Watch‑orn described the moment as “really incredible to think about what it’s been through.” He added, “The more and more you look at it, the more fascinating it becomes.”
