South Park Renames Itself "South America" in Satirical Jest at Trump
Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creative duo behind the long‑running animated series, have announced that the next season will be called South America, a sharp parody of President Donald Trump’s controversial attempts to re‑name lakes and oceans for political clout.
The announcement arrived after the show was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program last week. In a self‑deprecating tweet, the creators joked that the new name “pay[s] tribute to the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google,” referencing the companies that had already renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America in their map apps following a Trump order.
Trump’s August executive order renamed Lake Ontario as Lake America, and last year declared the Gulf of Mexico to be the Gulf of America. The moves drew criticism from Canada and Mexico, who argued that such renames ignored international jurisdiction over shared water bodies.
The creators’ new title is showcased on the show’s official social media feed by replacing the word “Park” with “America” on the town sign graphic, a clear visual cue of their satirical intent. They also thanked Paramount‑Skydance for a “Skydance Capitulation,” and noted the paused $111bn merger of Paramount with Warner‑Bros Discovery that was halted pending state lawsuit reviews.
South Park has a long history of lampooning Trump, drawing ire from the White House and MAGA supporters alike. In past seasons, the show has even portrayed the former president naked in bed with Satan, prompting some executives to refer to the series as a “fourth‑rate” show in need of careful brand management.
Fans can expect the first episode of the new season to premiere on 16 September. It remains to be seen whether the renamed series will attract as much attention as its previous provocative content.
