In brief

South Australia has been awarded its inaugural Michelin stars, with 11 restaurants across the state receiving the accolade. Magill Estate Restaurant earned a rare two stars while ten others received a single star each. The state’s covert inspections prompted the honour, sparking a surge in culinary tourism and positioning Adelaide on the global gastronomic map.

Australia has earned its first Michelin stars, a milestone that landed 11 restaurants from South Australia on the prestigious guide, the first such honour for any Australian state.

Magill Estate Restaurant in Adelaide is the sole two‑star venue, while ten other establishments—ranging from open‑fire kitchens to tasting‑menu venues—each received a single star.

The state paid for a covert inspection programme, a partnership that has held off recognitions in the rest of the country.

The Michelin Guide launched in 1900 to help motorists navigate France, later earning worldwide acclaim after introducing its star system in 1926. Two stars denote “excellent cooking worth a detour,” and three stars “exceptional cuisine worth a special journey.”

Tourism Minister Emily Bourke said the investment “puts South Australia on the world map” and will help usher in a new wave of culinary tourism.

The state’s move comes after New Zealand became the first Oceania country in July to appear in the guide after paying NZ$6.3 million over three years.

Magill’s owner, chef Scott Huggins, recalled dreaming of Michelin‑shaped kitchens in his youth and citing his experience in Europe and Japan.

The full roster of starred restaurants is:

Two‑star recipients

  • Magill Estate Restaurant – Rosslyn Park

One‑star recipients

  • Anvers Restaurant, Kangarilla

  • Maxwell Restaurant, McLaren Vale

  • Botanic, Adelaide

  • Arkhé, Norwood

  • Esmay, Adelaide

  • Aurora at ILA, Adelaide

  • Hentley Farm, Seppeltsfield

  • LVN Restaurant at Bird in Hand, Woodside

  • Aptos, Stirling

  • Skillogalee Barrel House, Sevenhill

Beyond the stars, the guide lists more than 70 South Australian outlets, many qualifying for the Bib Gourmand label that honours mid‑priced dining.

The announcement is a turning point for Australian cuisine, combining global recognition with local heritage and creating a fresh spotlight for regional food tourism.
