Sinners Sets New Record for Oscar Nominations

Vampire horror film Sinners has broken the record for the most Oscar nominations received by a single film, after being nominated for 16 of Hollywood's most coveted honours.

The film beat the previous record of 14 nominations, and emerged ahead of its nearest rival this year, Leonardo DiCaprio's thriller One Battle After Another, which is up for 13 awards.

Sinners' contenders include its star Michael B Jordan and his British co-stars Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo. Other prominent names in the running for Oscars include Timothée Chalamet, looking for his first win after two prior nominations, and Jessie Buckley, who leads the best actress race for her role in Hamnet.

However, notable absences from the nominations include Buckley's co-star Paul Mescal and the much-anticipated Wicked: For Good, which received no nods.

The list of films with the most nominations includes:

  • Sinners - 16
  • One Battle After Another - 13
  • Marty Supreme - 9
  • Frankenstein - 9
  • Sentimental Value - 9
  • Hamnet - 8

The winners will be announced during the ceremony on March 15 in Hollywood.

Sinners 'more than just a horror'

Sinners has exceeded expectations and bucked the trend that typically sees horror films struggle at award ceremonies. It surpassed the previous record total achieved by All About Eve in 1951, Titanic in 1998, and La La Land in 2018.

Michael B Jordan is nominated for best actor for his dynamic portrayal of twin brothers overcoming challenges in 1930s Mississippi, facing bloodsucking vampires at their juke joint.

Ryan Coogler is also recognized for his work as director, writer, and producer, with Sinners nominated for the best picture award.

BBC Radio 1 film critic Ali Plumb highlighted the significance of Sinners receiving such recognition and its blend of genres and themes, showcasing deep cultural issues through its narrative.

Regardless of the outcome, Sinners' impressive tally of nominations is good news for Warner Bros, the studio behind both Sinners and One Battle After Another, amidst the company's impending sale possibly to Netflix.
